Aspergers Syndrome And OCD

Aspergers Syndrome and OCD in adults is very common, in fact therapists often get confused when diagnosing people. Asperger’s traits are very similar to OCD symptoms. At the moment I’m obsessed with Nando’s sweet chilli jam, I had it in macaroni cheese the other day. I was actually diagnosed with Aspergers at 18, just before going to University, my OCD diagnosis came much earlier as my symptoms overlapped. The therapist who treated me said to my Mum “if he’s got Aspergers then I’ve got cancer”, which was very unprofessional.

Overcoming OCD

Obsessions are so difficult to put down, when you get it in your head that you need to do something you must do it. I’ve had many obsessions in my life, the list I endless. My biggest obsession is my running and my wish to be an elite runner. I used to run a half marathon, that’s 13.1 miles every weekend, I used to stretch my body to the limits. I used to go to the gym 3 times a week for an hour and a half to two hours, whilst I was working full time too.

Overcoming OCD

My obsession took over, however this could be confused with having a high episode within bipolar disorder but it wasn’t. I’ve talked this through with my therapist and we’ve realised it’s just my obsessive behaviour within my Aspergers. My current obsession is a good one, I’m obsessed with Photoshop, After Effects and SEO. It’s a good thing though as I’m busy optimising my website with SEO here and on my website, Design With Dan. I spend at least four to five hours a day enhancing my skills and I dream of expanding my business.

Obsessive Or Passionate?

Obsessive behaviour could be confused with passionate behaviour. I’m just passionate, whether it be running, SEO, walking, diamond art, tattoos or Lego! I have lots of Lego sets to build, a thousand diamond art pictures to do all while I’m trying to optimise three or four websites. I’m so busy with life right now, I’m up at 7am every single day, preparing TikTok videos and doing SEO.

I’m so motivated at the minute, it’s passion but there also is a hint of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and autism coming through. What are you obsessed with or do you just claim it’s a passion? Let me know in the comments.
