How I Started Running

Let me take you back to October 2017, as you may have read I was sat in a Bingo Hall, severely overweight, feeling very anxious, needing something to break free from. Then I signed up to Portsmouth’s Great South Run and my life changed dramatically.

So, how can I start?

To begin with, there’s something I’d like you to consider, what if you were taken hostage, forced on a treadmill on the highest setting and forced to run for at least 2 hours whilst being fed continuous doses of sugar and water. What would happen? Would you survive? Would you even make it out alive? OF COURSE YOU WOULD!

“It’s All In The Mind.”

The point I’m trying to get across to you is that running is ALL IN THE MIND. It’s YOU that makes that decision to put on those trainers, it’s YOU that makes that decision to go outside on a cold frosty morning, it’s YOU that runs a marathon because you’ve been training continuously for the past year, it’s YOU. In other words, if you want to lose weight and start running, go and run.

How far shoud I run?

To begin with I recommend running at least 2-3 times a week. There’s no need for any gym sessions yet as you need to get used to running on the road. The hills, the bumps, the flat, knowing how to deal with these during your running is key. When you start you’ll probably begin to feel stiff after the first few runs especially if they are a longer distance, listen to your body, don’t push it too hard as you may suffer an injury. Remember, the more you run, the easier it gets.
